Christmas markets tips for you:

Originating in German speaking Europe during the Middle Ages, Christmas Markets have spread to other cities from Prague to Manchester and Madrid.  Germany and Austria, though, still remain the traditional “Christkind” markets with their beautiful stalls, myriad of merchandise and wonderful food and entertainment.

The best, cheapest and easiest way to see the markets is to take a river cruise with one of several companies offering these itineraries during the Advent Season.  The cruises will cover one or two of the rivers in the area, Danube, Rhine, Mosel and last 7-10 days.  This is also a great way to explore the area as it will cost a fraction of what the same itinerary would be in the summer months.  Be sure to forego the ship meals and try the local fare.  Goulash in Budapest, bratwurst in Germany, and Sacher-Torte in Vienna, Austria, served with dark coffee and the traditional spoon sitting on the cup.  Mix with the people and enjoy a unique experience!
