Desoto point National Memorial is located in the Manattee River inside Tampa Bay.  This is one of our favorite destinations because it offers exceeding good holding ground, good protection from the wind from every direction except for very high easterly winds.  you can anchor fairly close to the beach area in about 6 feet of water and dinghy ashore to view the very good descriptive narratives along the trail of the experiences encountered by the Spanish explorers in 1539 and also take in the exhibits and video of what life was like for both the natives of the area and the explorers when they first came in contact with each other.

The discovery center run by the national park service is very informative and allows you to get a feeling for life as an explorer by trying out a metal chain mail armor as worn by the Spaniards of the period.
